Veterans Day

We have a lot of wonderful men and women who are or who have served our country. The 3rd grade celebrated Veterans Day by making patriotic cards and pictures. They will be sent to Major Slack (Mr. Slack's cousin) who has served in Iraq several times and now is stationed at West Point. Also, Captain Bair (Mrs. Slack's friend) will receive some of our cards. He is currently stationed in Iraq for the 3rd time.

3rd grade AR!

3S is doing a great job of reading, reading, reading for Accelerated Reader! By last Friday, almost everyone had earned at least 1 point, and 4 students were over 10 points! Currently, Mrs. Slack is reading the class a book called "The Candy Corn Contest." In our class, we're having our own candy corn contest, too! For every AR point students earn through Nov 12th, students can earn a guess in the contest. The winner with the closest guess, wins the jar! Starting in November, students will also begin working toward a Hat Day incentive. Keep Reading!! :)

This week...

Wonder what your child should be learning this week in 3rd grade?

Your child should be able to:

* subtract larger numbers with more than one regrouping.

* explain the difference between fantasy and realism.

* write a fiction story about their pumpkin from the pumpkin's point of view.

*explain what service is and brainstorm ideas of how they can help their community.

* spell words with 'long i' patterns.

*read fluently at their reading level and locate specific details.

and mush more :) Ask your child about what they learned today!

New Pet!

After our cool animal assembly on Friday here at school. Mr. Slack and I decided we wanted to get a chinchilla!! Although when we found them at the pet store, we couldn't leave one by itself, we took home both! They are brothers and we named them Springer (lighter one) and Marley! They have been a fun animal to watch and take care of so far. They are nocturnal, like to jump, and take dust baths! Leave a comment with any questions about this softest animal in the world!

It's the little things that help...

Here at PG, we are trying to do the little things that can make a difference...

*We're collecting Box Tops for Education! (Contest ends on Thursday, but you can continue to bring them in!) These help out school buy some fun extras!

*In conjunction with the Grange, we're collecting pop can tabs to help their project to help the hearing impaired. Collect them all year!

*We're trying out a recycling project: a pumpkin mosaic. Thanks for all the great snack bags!

FUN Friday!

We had a FUN Friday this past week. It was Constitution Day so we dressed in red, white, and blue. Our caterpillars began changing in front of our eyes! The chrysalis' are beginning to form!
Our class met their goal of every student doing their homework that week (it's been a struggle the prior 2 weeks!). We celebrated by making chocolate fondue sauce after we finished reading "The History of Chocolate." What fun!

Getting to know you...

I am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you this week at school! You are officially a member of the 1st class of Mrs. Slack :)

Since you get to tell me a lot about you this week, here's a little bit about me!
I graduated from PG and then Louisville High School in '99. I earned a BA in Early Childhood Education with a Reading Endorsement in '03 from Mount Union College. In '08, I earned my Master in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College.

This summer, I married Mr. Slack at Mount Union College. We had an awesome wedding! I have also gained a stepdaughter, Cailor, who is 6. Mr. Slack and I enjoy taking hikes, cooking, photography, remodeling, eating sushi, and traveling. In the past, I've coached tennis at LHS. I still enjoy playing, but this year have taken on the role of building tech and teacher mentor.

I am excited to having a great year of learning with you in 3S! I am always open to helping you in any way I can to reach your highest potential! I'm a great listener too :) Let's have a great year!
